Sleep You Way to a Healthy Immune System

Let’s quickly recap.

Your immune system is your body’s defense system.  When you feel good your immune system is doing its thing and functioning the way it’s supposed to.  But… when it isn’t working properly you are more vulnerable to illness and infection.  Did you know that you can sleep your way to a healthy immune system?

Life can be stressful on a regular basis and now with the restrictions and uncertainty in our world, the stress and anxiety you feel can negatively affect your immune system.  Perhaps your stress is keeping you awake at night.  It’s certainly understandable.

But what does lack of sleep or disrupted sleep have to do with your immune system?  When you sleep your body makes a protein called cytokines that targets infection and inflammation which is part of the immune response.  Your body makes and releases these protective proteins when you sleep.  If you are not sleeping your body can’t make them.

Muscle repair, memory consolidation, and release of hormones that regulate growth and appetite all happen when you are asleep.  Not only is your body able to perform these life functions you sleep your way to a healthy immune system.

Lack of sleep is associated with the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart, and cardiovascular disease.
