Don’t beat yourself up if you set goals and fail to accomplish them. Did you know that 92% of people who set New Year’s goals don’t achieve their goals? Most people set out to reach goals with the best intentions, and then they burn out. I totally get it. I am writing you right from my own burnout experience. What can you do to increase your chances of achieving your goals? Let me share what I am doing and what I do to help my clients reach their goals. What is my secret sauce? Reframe, Recommit, Run!
Goals are great, but they can also be a burden. If a goal is too overwhelming, you will likely drop it faster than you can consider accomplishing it. Have you ever asked yourself S.M.A.R.T. questions about your goal? Consider one thing you set out to do and you just fizzled out. Let’s take that goal and make it a S.M.A.R.T. goal. Ask yourself, “Is my goal:

Set yourself up for success by reframing your current goals into S.M.A.R.T. goals. Setting short-term achievable and measurable goals can give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you motivated to stay on course. When I work with my clients to help them make lifestyle changes, we start with a simple goal like adding one serving of vegetables per day, seven days a week for digestive and immune support. Simple, Meaningful, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Consider taking a moment right now to write your S.M.A.R.T. goal on a piece of paper with seven boxes next to it and check a box every day you reach that goal. Now you can measure your progress. You got this!
S.M.A.R.T. goals help increase your success rate. But what happens when life happens? Have you noticed as soon as you set out on a mission to exercise five days a week, that is the time you have to take an unexpected trip? I will laugh right along with you because that has happened WAY too many times in my world. I set out to reach a goal, and life happens. Sometimes the bustle in life slowly chips away at our personal and professional life, and we don’t have time for goals anymore. Don’t give in to the lies of defeat. The key here is to RECOMMIT to your goals and get back on course.
When you RECOMMIT, consider adjusting your goals to fit your lifestyle, so it naturally flows with your routine. Consider challenging yourself enough to push you outside your comfort zone, but not too much where it inflicts stress. Also, when you RECOMMIT, consider recruiting an accountability partner. You can increase your chances for success by 65%! When I decided to do a 21-day workout challenge after a couple of unexpected travel weeks, I recruited my husband to hold me accountable. I didn’t have time to fall through the cracks with my wellness program, so right off the bat, I needed to RECOMMIT.
Now you have your S.M.A.R.T. goals, and you set yourself up for success with a RECOMMIT plan when life happens. Now what? RUN! Yes, RUN! Don’t run away, but RUN towards your goal with everything you got. Keep your eye on the target, and don’t look back. When life happens, RECOMMIT. If your goals are too overwhelming, REFRAME. Feel like giving up and throwing in the towel, RUN towards your goal. Reframe, recommit and run and achieve your goals.
When I decided to go back to school to finish my doctorate while raising six kids, running a business, and homeschooling, I had to be realistic with my goals. I set S.M.A.R.T. goals broken down by week over the course of nine months. When life happened, and I couldn’t accomplish my weekly goals for some time, I had to REFRAME, RECOMMIT, and RUN towards my goal. Amazingly, by the grace of God, I finished my doctorate in record time and went on to publish my first book within a year of completing my doctorate. Believe me, when you set your mind on something, RUN towards it with all your heart and enjoy the journey.
